Is the west coast of Gulf of Thailand better in summer. I'm planning trip for a group from my uni and need some honest advice. [Whichever dive shop I contact tells me it's best there].

We want to stay on land and dive by day trip - no-where to built up, but reasonable accommodation - nothing too pricy. Probably late July/early Aug.

I would say you would be better off diving in the gulf of thailand if your looking at july/august. you could head to either koh samui, koh phangan or koh tao. however most of the diving is located around koh tao except for sail rock and angtong marine park which would be easier accessed from samui or phangan as it would be a full day trip from koh tao if there is anyone running a trip during your visit. I would recommend you split your trip over 2 or three of the islands to get the best diving available without excessivelly long boat trips everyday

It can be very nice over here on the west coast during that time. The diving from Krabi can offer a good selection of sites for newbies and more advanced divers. Even when the wind gets up a bit, we can find sheltered sites around our local islands or out to Phi Phi. When all is good, the Shark Point marine Reserve is always a faourite.
