The Technical Explorer course is aimed at the diver who wants to increase their diving skills and knowledge to progress into technical diving. To enroll in the course divers must hold a minimum qualification of sports diver (or equivalent) with an additional 20 dives since passing the course. Upon completing the Technical Explorer Twinset course the student will be qualified to dive to 40m using a twinset rig to complete decompression dives. COURSE OUTLINE The course is split onto 4 sections, 6 theory, 2 dry practical, 2 confined water dives and 4 Open water dives. The dives are designed to first gradually build up the students confidence with the equipment in a confined water environment no deeper than 10 meters before moving onto open water dives and gradually increasing the depth down to 40m. As the dives progress deeper the student will be expected to complete all tasks within the planned dive time and the final dive will be a full deco dive. THEORY LESSONS The theory lessons will take the students through all the necessary knowledge to plan and dive dives involving decompression stops, the equipment needed to complete decompression dives and also safety procedures including oxygen use. The course will cover the following lectures:
DRY PRACTICAL The course contains 2 dry practical sessions. Session 1 looks at the twinset set up and shows the student how to properly set up their rigs for their own personal comfort and ease of use. Session 2 covers all the auxiliary equipment the students will be using like reels, DSMB’s, torches etc and shows them correct preparation techniques and how to combine all the equipment with their twinset rig. CONFINED WATER DIVES (10 M MAX) The confined dives give the students their first experience in water with their twinset rigs. The first dive is designed to help the students acclimatize to their new rigs and discover any setup changes they may need to make before moving onto some of the more challenging skills. Dive 2 allows the students to check any adjustments they made to their rigs after dive 1 and starts to introduce the students to new skills with their twinset rigs. OPEN WATER DIVES Dives 1 and 2 bring the student down to 20 meters and repeat skills learned in the confined water sessions along with introducing new skills. Dive 1 will concentrate purely on skill practice and all skills should be performed while maintaining neutral buoyancy. Dive 2 introduces the students to dive run times and all skills should be completed within the allotted dive time followed by simulated deco stops. Dive 3 concentrates more on run time management and depth management. This dive will be run as a simulated deco dive and the students have to complete all skills within the allotted dive time. Dive 4 is the final dive of the course and is planned and executed by the students themselves with no assistance from the instructor. The students have to plan their dives to a maximum depth of 40m and calculate their gas consumptions and deco requirements for the dive. They will also plan all emergency contingency dive profiles required to dive their planned dive. Once the Instructor has checked the dive plans are all correct and safe the students will execute their planned dives and deco schedules with the instructor observing the entire dive. Upon completing dive 4 successfully the students will be awarded the BSAC Technical Explorer Twinset Certification. Having completed this course the student may now move onto the Accelerated Decompression Procedures course or if they prefer they can do the Technical Explorer Sidemount course first. This just involves 1 equipment theory session and the confined and open water dives of the Sidemount course.
